Poor BY Choice ?

I had this interesting conversation with my colleague at office yesterday...
Several thoughts within me were awakened and his words kept haunting me while I was driving back on my bicycle to home....

We were discussing about developed & developing nations and the state of India in particular. I am a die-hard optimist and I always believe that we all need to sacrifice and provide self-less service to the nation in which we were born.
All the developed nations are "developed" only because of such selfless sacrifice & hardwork by its citizens for several generations. Today's generation in such developed nations are reaping benefits of its predecessors & are following a culture set by them & continue to grow further.

India too will join the bandwagon of such developed nations soon, I have no doubts in that !
But, many of us want it NOW !, is it practical ? or is it even possible ? ...Possible. May be, but might not be practical to think of drastic & dramatic changes within few days !
Its requires relentless service, community building, and of course "educating" the masses which will alone empower every citizen in further strengthening the nation and making it more powerful.
This process will take time & will happen only if we all take a resolve to contribute back to the community & offer services to share knowledge which we possess, in whichever area.
All this might sound cliched, but this is the way to strengthen the community & build stronger nations.

I know & many do believe that poverty is the number 1 problem in our country, India. But I defer & firmly believe its education which is the topmost issue. If we have an educated population, poverty & population problems will also get tackled.

This was the exact remark I made to my colleague in the conversation which I mentioned at the beginning of this blog.....I immediately got back reply & my colleague said, "I dont think India is poor, its the individuals / citizens of the country who choose to be poor !"
I did not have an immediate reply for the above statement. I thought, "hmmm...isnt it true ! I know that there lacks opportunities, there lacks funding, there lacks the infrastructure...But...."

I am still pondering over this , apart from whatever I mentioned above, on the service front, on giving back to the society, isnt it finally dependent on all the individual citizens of the nation who "should" take a resolve to arise , become powerful, to work hard and eradicate poverty....?
May be, it then boils down to the society we build, the aim/goal each one has "for its nation" too !,are we all missing such a goal ? Are we too lazy to fight poverty and arise ? Are we lacking the strength and do not want to work hard to join the league of "developed nations"

I do not have answers yet...But a nice thought to ponder over....
